Sri Lanka, Hong Kong seek stronger trade and investment links

Sri Lanka and Hong Kong are seeking to deepen trade and investment ties, with more than 100 Sri Lankan exporters and business representatives taking part in a business networking event in Colombo on August 19.

The “Bridging Markets: Unlocking Hong Kong–Sri Lanka Trade & Investment Opportunities” seminar and networking dinner was held at Cinnamon Life and organised by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO) in Jakarta, Invest Hong Kong (InvestHK) and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), in association with the Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) and the National Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka.

Participants represented key export sectors including apparel, handicrafts, ICT and software, boat building, gems, food and tea. The discussions focused on expanding Sri Lankan exports to Hong Kong, Mainland China and other international markets, while exploring investment opportunities and business partnerships.

EDB Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Mangala Wijesinghe said stronger international partnerships were essential to creating new market opportunities for Sri Lankan exporters. He stressed the need to position Sri Lanka as a competitive and reliable trading and investment destination by capitalising on its skilled workforce, diverse export base and strategic location.

InvestHK and HKTDC representatives outlined opportunities for Sri Lankan businesses through investment facilitation, the GoGlobal initiative, international trade fairs and business summits. HKTDC Director for South Asia and Thailand Vian Cheung highlighted the organisation’s international network and trade promotion platforms available to Sri Lankan companies seeking to expand overseas.

National Chamber of Commerce President Anura Warnakulasooriya also stressed the importance of business networking, SME support and bilateral cooperation. The event concluded with a networking session that brought Sri Lankan exporters and Hong Kong business representatives together to explore potential partnerships.

The EDB said continued collaboration with Hong Kong trade and investment agencies would help Sri Lankan companies diversify markets, strengthen international links and pursue new export and investment opportunities.
