Despite complaints from the Sri Lanka Election Commission (EC) for breaking the law, social media companies have refused to take down 87 posts or links. According to official data, the island nation received the most complaints for defamation.

490 complaints have been sent by the EC to social media companies, requesting that they take action against the links and content that it believes violate the nation’s election regulations.

According to EC data, these complaints include hate speech (67), incorrect information (52), defamation on the basis of gender, race, religion, and privacy (179), election law violations (124), the use of children in campaigns (39), and false news (29).

According to the data, social media networks have taken down 184 of the 490 complaints against online content, and the EC is still awaiting answers to 219 of the complaints.

The names of certain social media companies that did not respond to the concerns were not disclosed by the EC, though.
