The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has clarified that no new decisions have been made against the competitive procurement of diesel, addressing recent media reports that misinterpreted the issue.

In a statement, the CEB explained that it relies on three types of petroleum fuels—Heavy Fuel Oil, Naphtha, and Diesel—for electricity generation. While diesel is the only fuel available through competitive bidding, due to multiple distributors, the CEB noted that it has never procured diesel for electricity generation via this method, even under previous governments.

The new management reaffirmed that no decisions have been taken against competitive diesel procurement. However, the CEB emphasized that diesel is not considered an economically viable option for electricity generation.

As of September 30, 2024, only 1.1% of electricity was generated using diesel. The CEB assured that it remains committed to following competitive procedures across all its operations.
