Inflation in Sri Lanka: September 2024 and Its Impact on Living Costs

Sri Lanka entered deflationary territory in September 2024, with headline inflation dropping to -0.5% year-on-year, marking the first deflation since 2015. Both food and non-food categories recorded negative inflation, with food prices declining by 0.3% and non-food prices by 0.5%. While this deflation temporarily reduces the cost of living, especially for essential goods, it may signal underlying economic weaknesses such as reduced demand and consumer spending. The drop in inflation has mixed implications for living costs. On one hand, the lower food prices provide some relief to households grappling with elevated costs from the previous years. However, the decline in non-food inflation, which includes sectors like transport and utilities, could be less impactful as these items often have fixed or slow-changing prices.

Consequently, while groceries may become slightly cheaper, other everyday costs, such as housing and healthcare, may not reflect this downward trend as significantly. Looking ahead, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka expects inflation to remain well below its 5% target in the coming months. This trend may continue for a short period, as the country benefits from easing supply conditions and adjustments to administratively controlled prices. However, deflation could also hint at weaker economic demand, potentially impacting business profitability and employment.

Over the medium term, inflation is expected to stabilize around the Central Bank’s target, aided by necessary monetary policies and measures aimed at restoring economic stability. In the longer run, while lower inflation can ease cost pressures on households, policymakers must ensure that it does not slow down economic growth or investment. Sustained, moderate inflation is generally seen as a sign of a healthy economy, so efforts to maintain stability without deflation will be crucial.
