According to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, negotiations are underway in Sri Lanka to lower the damages owed to the contractor of a portion of the central highway and resume construction.

After Sri Lanka’s financial default, China was unable to continue financing the expressway’s construction between Kadawatha and Meerigama, he claimed.

President Dissanayake stated at a public gathering in Thambuttegama on Sunday, “We have been forced to pay damages because it was halted for a number of years.”

One agency provides the loan, while another agency fulfills the contract. Their machinery is breaking down, and what has already been constructed is collapsing.

“Therefore, we must compensate damages. We are negotiating with the Chinese government to cut that payout in half at the very least.

“Therefore, they are requesting hefty compensation.”

He added that China had consented to re-start financing the central bank expressway’s Kadawatha to Meerigma segment.
