The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce and its Sri Lanka-China Business Council (SLCHBC) hosted a business delegation from China’s Yunnan Province, bringing together companies from a wide range of sectors to explore trade, investment and commercial partnerships with Sri Lankan businesses.
The delegation, led by the Yunnan Provincial Federation of Industry and Commerce, included representatives from companies involved in pharmaceuticals and healthcare, agriculture, dairy, industrial machinery, construction materials, information technology, steel, tea, food manufacturing, hospitality and logistics.
Direct engagement between companies can help identify areas of mutual commercial interest and pave the way for new business relationships, Shiran Fernando, Secretary General and Chief Executive Officer of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, said.
There was “significant potential to increase Sri Lanka’s exports to China and broaden the range of products entering the Chinese market”, the President of the Sri Lanka-China Business Council said.
He noted that Sri Lanka’s export basket remains concentrated in a relatively limited number of products and that interactions with visiting business delegations can help local firms identify buyers, explore new markets and build commercial links.
He also highlighted opportunities for cooperation in agriculture, food processing, healthcare, manufacturing, technology, engineering and tourism.
Head of Delegation Pan Hongwei, Executive Vice Chairman of the Yunnan Provincial Federation of Industry and Commerce, said there was growing scope for economic cooperation between Sri Lanka and China.
He outlined existing trade ties in sectors including agricultural products, pharmaceuticals, gems and rubber-based products, while pointing to Yunnan’s status as China’s largest coffee-producing region as a potential avenue for future collaboration in agricultural trade and related industries.
