Sri Lanka’s mobile and fixed broadband speeds sharply deteriorated in May as the country reverted to Working From Home (WFH) with the unofficial lockdown coming into effect from late April.

The country’s mobile and fixed broadband speeds fell by 11 and 15 spots to be ranked at 132th and 121th spots globally in the month, according to Ookla’s latest Speedtest global index.

The mobile download speeds in May declined to 13.89Mbps from 17.75 Mbps in April and, mobile download speeds stagnate to 6.68Mbps in May from 8.63MBps in April.

Overall, the mobile internet speeds were worse in May this year compared to the same period of last year when the contry was under a much stricter lockdown.

The fixed broadband download speed in May slowed to 24.35Mbps from 30.48 Mbps in April and upload speeds also recorded a decline in the month. however, fixed broadband speeds in May remained slightly above the speeds one year back.

Gobally, fixed broadband and mobile inernet speeds continued to improve in the month.
