Sri Lankan to ban several single-use plastic products from 2021

The government decided to ban a range single-use plastic and polythene waste material products including Poly Ethylene Terephthalate (PET) and Vinyl Chloride (PVC) containers from with effect from 2021.

The Cabinet of Ministers yesterday decided to the packaging of chemical and pesticides in Poly Ethylene Terephthalate (PET) and Vinyl Chloride (PVC) containers, sachets made of polythene and plastic lesser than 20 ml/ 20g, inflatable plastic toys (excluding balloons, balls, and floating toys) and plastic cotton buds from the beginning of next year.

As an alternative, it was decided to promote glass containers, bio degradable cotton buds and eco-friendly toys.

It will be also mandatory to declare the 1-7 Codes Internationally recommended to promote the recycling of all plastic products.
